Booked for Life

The everlasting in-between:
Masks of white. Clothes of green
Your Tears of joy, a wailing scream
Another picture missing me

High chairs, diapers, dirt and mud
Knee crawls, First falls, bruises, blood
Smiling, sobbing, half past three
Another picture missing me

Cousins, uncles, Turkey day
Mothers laugh as toddlers play
Pecan pie, white beans, sweet tea
Another picture missing me

Sandwich stuffed in the lunch box
Fresh-Pressed pants, warm clean socks
You smiled and waved and watched him leave
Another picture missing me

Deep in love, alone, confused
Father figure long removed
Grinning over young beauty
Another picture missing me

Robes and speeches, much too long
Kids march to a well-known song
A wide stage crossed, a young man free
Another picture missing me

A life once so new, Long gone now
I worked for you, and yet somehow
Each dream you have, each memory
Is filled with pictures missing me
